Five Adventures in Your Backyard
With the summer months upon us, there’s never been a better time to get out as a family and enjoy some of our community’s best fun and free local activities. A staycation can provide a much-needed opportunity to keep your family engaged and connected.
This summer, Wayne UNC Health Care encourages you to enjoy our beautiful community through these great venues and attractions.
Go Camping, and Enjoy a Scenic Hike
With impressive cliffs overlooking the Neuse River, Cliffs of the Neuse State Park has been a landmark for centuries. Venture down one of five hiking trails, and you’ll find riverside habitats, mature forests, quiet fishing spots and an 11-acre swimming lake with a bathhouse.
The park has group campsites, a 32-site family campground and three cabins.
Dance Your Heart Out
With great music, cold drinks, delicious food from local vendors and kids’ activities, Center Street Jam is a free after-hours summer concert series in Downtown Goldsboro. Grab your lawn chairs, and dance your heart out to great bands 6-9 p.m. every other Thursday.
Make Memories as a Family
The summer months are packed with free local festivals and fun events right here in Goldsboro and Wayne County. Bring your whole family – including your dog – to Stoney Creek Dog Park 6-8 p.m. every fourth Wednesday of the month for Yappy Hour, a fun, family event with pizza, pups and pours of local beer.
Or, cool off under the city of Goldsboro’s giant sprinkler as a family 3-4 p.m. every Thursday at Cornerstone Commons during Sprinkler Fun Days downtown. For other great activities, see a full schedule of events at http://www.visitgoldsboronc.com/events.
Enjoy a Walk or Bike Ride
Enjoy mountain biking? Check out Goldsboro’s 3-mile Stoney Creek North Greenway paved greenway trail. If you like walking, jogging, cycling or skating, the new greenway path behind Wayne Community College and Wayne UNC Health Care, Reedy Branch Greenway, offers a 1.5-mile stretch linking New Hope Road to Glouchester Road.
Take a Tour
Pick-your-own farms across Wayne and surrounding counties give you and your family access to delicious strawberries, corn, tomatoes and much more.
Check out Cottle Farms at Hwy 117-South in Goldsboro 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Saturday or 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday for strawberries. Or stop by Odom Farming Company Inc. at 1426 Claridge Nursery Road for strawberries – you pick or already picked. For a full-listing, see Wayne County.
Take a “Staycation”
Downtown Goldsboro offers a wealth of options for knocking out your back to school shopping. Shop local vendors any time Aug. 3-4 during Shop the Block, and you may be rewarded on the spot for supporting downtown merchants. There will also be a social media scavenger hunt with clues that can lead you to win Downtown Dollars.
