Embark on a fulfilling journey with our NextGen Volunteer Program (formerly known as Junior Volunteers) that offers teenagers and young adults an incredible chance to make a positive impact on their community while exploring the dynamic world of healthcare. NextGen Volunteer assignments are tailored to your interests, such as patient care units, recovery rooms, and office support. Engage in a variety of exciting duties like interacting with patients, restocking supplies, and even boosting your retail skills in the gift shop!

NextGen Wayne - High School

Designed for high school students ages 15–18, this pathway introduces teens to the healthcare setting while fostering responsibility, professionalism, and service.

Requirements:

  • Age 15-18. Must have completed 8th grade when program begins.
  • Submit your own application and two-character references.
  • High maturity and commitment level.
  • Must be available 6 out of 8 weeks during the summer. 

NextGen Wayne - College & University

Designed for students 18 years and older who are actively enrolled in a college or university and interested in gaining meaningful volunteer experience in a healthcare setting.

Requirements:

  • Currently enrolled at a college or university.
  • Maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA.
  • Demonstrate good attendance and academic standing.
  • Strong professionalism, accountability, and time management skills. 

If Accepted: 

  • Be fully vaccinated for the flu. Documentation must be provided.
  • Complete initial and annual health assessment at UNC Health Wayne.
  • Attend orientation and specialized training.
  • While volunteering, teen must wear a uniform consisting of UNC Health Wayne polo, khaki pants and a UNC Health ID badge. 
  • Must remain on hospital campus during work shifts, unless written permission has been provided by parents/guardians.

 Summer Program

  • Recruitment Opens: January 1
  • Applications Accepted: January 1 – March 1
  • Final Selections Completed: By April 1
  • Program Start: Mid-June or immediately following the end of the school year

Additional Information:

  • One-day-per-week commitment
  • Kick off the program with a mandatory orientation (date to be determined)
  • Only one absence allowed during this 12-week adventure
