UNC Health Care Chargemaster Information
As of January 1, 2019, all hospitals in the United States are required to publicly post charges for hospital-based procedures, services, supplies, prescription drugs, and diagnostic tests, as well as fees associated with equipment or facilities used during a patient’s appointment or inpatient stay.
A few items to note:
There are three columns in the document. The first column is a description of the item or procedure. The second column contains a code, or codes, used by all hospitals to identify common items, this is called the Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS). This column may display a Common Procedural Terminology (CPT) code. The third column is the charge per unit of an item or service. All of these fields are searchable once the file is downloaded and opened on your computer.
The unit charge listed here is unlikely to be the amount that you see on a bill if you are a patient at UNC Health Care. Due to various agreements we have in place with insurers, Medicare and Medicaid, this may not be the final price incurred. UNC Health Care works with patients who have financial need through our Financial Assistance Program.
There is variation in the costs listed, and in some cases, the same items’ costs vary at different hospitals within our system. The cost of an item or service is based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, the cost per unit at the time of purchase for supplies and medications and the classification of a hospital based on federal government standards. For example, charges will vary if you receive care at a designated critical access hospital vs. an academic medical center.
Refer to your Explanation of Benefits (EOB) and your billing statement to see the amount you owe for services provided during your visits to UNC Health Care.
If you have questions about what you see listed on your EOB or billing statement, please call our Billing Customer Service Center at 800-594-8624 (toll free long distance) or 984-974-2222 (local calls).
