When your doctor needs to learn more about your health, you may receive a computed tomography (CT) exam at Wayne UNC Health Care in Goldsboro. This special type of X-ray test creates detailed, 3D pictures of organs, blood vessels, tissues, and bones.

Why Do I Need a CT Scan?
Your doctor may order CT imaging to look for the cause of your symptoms, plan treatment, or check how well treatment is working. CT scans can identify problems such as:
How to Prepare
Follow the guidelines you receive when scheduling your test, including:
- Avoiding certain foods or drinks before the exam
- Letting us know if you’re pregnant
- Wearing loose, comfortable clothes to the appointment
What to Expect
A caring technologist will help you get into position on an exam table. Then, the table will slide into the scanner. The technologist will leave the room, but will monitor you through a window to ensure your safety and comfort.
The test will take anywhere from a few minutes to a half hour, depending on the part of the body under examination.

Using the Least Radiation Necessary
Rest assured we’ll keep you safe during imaging tests. We follow industry Image Gently® and Image Wisely® recommendations to provide no more radiation than needed for each patient and test. We also use specific protocols to reduce the radiation dose for children.
Results
A board-certified radiologist will review your images and send a report to your health care provider. Expect a call from your doctor’s office to discuss the results and next steps.
