Early Detection: The key to successful treatment of breast cancer.

Breast cancer is diagnosed more than any other type of cancer. In fact, 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. While very common, if caught early, the cancer is very treatable. Women at average risk should start talking to their doctors about breast cancer screening at age 40, likely with a mammogram. Women who have a higher risk of breast cancer, for example because of family history, should begin mammograms earlier, probably in their 30s. Conversation with your doctor is key and early detection offers the best chance of remission.

For more information on risk factors and early detection, see the medical article, What Doctors Know About Reducing Breast Cancer.

Schedule a Screening Mammogram

Fill out our Schedule a Mammogram form to request an appointment at Wayne UNC Health Care. You don’t need a referral for a screening mammogram, but you’ll need to tell us the name of your primary care provider. (Find a Primary Care Provider.)

If you’re experiencing breast pain or feel a lump, see your primary care provider to determine if you need a referral for a diagnostic mammogram.
