Goldsboro, N.C. | Dr. Joel Rose, MD, FACS, FASMBS, has been named Chief Medical Officer at UNC Health Wayne. Dr. Rose brings extensive experience in surgical care, physician leadership, and healthcare administration, along with a strong commitment to collaborative, patient-centered care.

Dr. Rose joins UNC Health Wayne from UNC Health Lenoir, where he has served on the medical staff since 2015 and played a key role in advancing both general surgery and bariatric services. As Medical Director of the hospital’s accredited bariatric program, he helped lead efforts to expand access to specialized surgical care while maintaining high standards for safety and patient outcomes. During his time there, Dr. Rose also served as President of the Medical Staff and as a member of the hospital’s Board of Directors.

In addition to his clinical leadership, Dr. Rose previously served as Executive Medical Director for the UNC Health Medical Group supporting both UNC Health Wayne and UNC Health Lenoir, helping guide physician engagement and operational alignment across the region.

Dr. Rose completed his undergraduate studies at Emory University and earned his medical degree from the University of Connecticut Health Center. He completed his General Surgery internship and residency at East Carolina University, followed by a fellowship in advanced gastrointestinal and minimally invasive surgery at Virginia Commonwealth University.

Throughout his career, Dr. Rose has emphasized teamwork, shared accountability, and strong communication among interdisciplinary care teams. As Chief Medical Officer, he will focus on strengthening physician engagement, supporting clinical quality initiatives, and fostering collaboration across departments to further enhance the care experience for patients and families.

Rose assumes the role effective immediately.
