UNC Health Wayne Launches OB Emergency Department to Provide Specialized Pregnancy Emergency Care

UNC Health Wayne has officially launched its new OB Emergency Department (OB ED), providing specialized emergency care for pregnant mothers greater than 16 weeks gestation who are experiencing pregnancy-related concerns or emergencies.

The service is now live and designed to help expectant mothers receive faster access to highly specialized obstetric care when they need it most.

Patients arriving at the UNC Health Wayne Emergency Department who are more than 16 weeks pregnant should inform front desk staff of their pregnancy status during check-in. Eligible patients will be transferred directly to the UNC Health Wayne OBED, where they will be cared for by a specialized team trained in obstetric and perinatal emergencies.

The new OB Emergency Department enhances the hospital’s ability to provide focused care for pregnancy-related emergencies in a dedicated clinical environment tailored specifically to the needs of expectant mothers and babies.

“This new service allows us to provide mothers with quicker access to specialized obstetric care during urgent situations,” said Summer Flowers, Director of Nursing Services for the Labor and Delivery department. “By connecting patients directly with our perinatal experts, we are enhancing both the patient experience and the level of care available to our community.”

The OB Emergency Department is part of UNC Health Wayne’s ongoing commitment to expanding access to high-quality women’s healthcare services close to home.
